Come and enjoy what Bicycling Magazine (8/94) called one of the "19 great Tandem Rides":

The 16th Annual Southern Tier Tandem Rally

Friday through Sunday, August 22nd to 24th, 2008.

Get on your tandem and ride with us on one of the four scenic routes each day. With the terrain ranging from flat to rolling to hilly climbs, the rides will be fun for both families and speedsters. Both days have rides ranging from 18 miles to metric centuries. Detailed cue sheets and maps are provided for all rides.

Following the rides, we'll gather for a barbecue, swimming, and socializing. Each tandem team will bring a dish to pass on Saturday (or on Sunday if not attending on Saturday.) We'll provide the main course such as our famous barbecued beef ribs, hot dogs, vegetarian lasagna, etc.; as well as a range of drinks, and picnic necessities. Showers and changing areas will be available both days.

Each year, folks come from ten states and Canada to join our more local riders. Families join the rides with child stokers as well as trailers with smaller children. The rides, the barbecue, the great dishes which were brought (many of us do ride to eat!), the swimming pool, and the chance to share stories with other tandem pairs, all combine to make a great weekend.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

The fun begins Friday! The rally begins Friday afternoon at 2:30 with either a hilly 21 mile group ride or an easy, 'get-acquainted' 13 to 23 mile group ride. Both rides go to one of our local ice cream shops. Cue sheets will also be available for self supported rides after 1 PM on Friday. There will be a wine and cheese and hors-d'oeurves get-together at 7PM Friday night at our house, rally headquarters.

Saturday's and Sunday's rides range from generally flat along the Chemung River valley, to climbers with impressive valley views. Three rides follow historic routes taken by General Sullivan's Army during the Revolutionary War. The Metric Centuries, a different one each day, vary from flat to hill climbs and beautiful rolling countryside. There is also a fairly flat family ride with an ice cream stop as the mid-point destination.

Pre-registration: by July 1st - $65 for the three days or $30 per bike for Sunday only. Late registration is $10 extra. Saturday sign-in is from 8:45 to 9:30; Saturday rides begin at 9:30. Sunday sign-in is 8:30 to 9:00; Sunday rides begin at 9:00. Registration for each day will be limited to 45 tandems. Registration form and waiver must be filled out. Helmets are required. Remember that registration is limited, so please sign up early!
