Day 4, Wednesday
Tour the Historical sights of Seneca Falls, gateway to the Finger Lakes, then continue on to the beautiful town of Skaneateles. Rides of 31 or 50 miles.
Seneca Falls is an old Finger Lakes mill town with lots of history.
The waterways originally brought businesses like mills, distilleries and factories. Canals and locks linked it to the Erie Canal by 1828. By the mid 1800's it was a center for social and religious reform. Abolition of slavery, temperance and women's rights were issues suported by many residents. The 1st Women's Rights Convention occured here in the Wesleyan Chapel, with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony joining forces here. Begin your visit at the Heritage Area's Visitor Center. Then visit the Women's Rights National Women's Hall of Fame which connects us with that time through sculptures and exhibets.
Later, Frank Capra visited the area before making his 1946 classic, "It's a Wonderful Life" and many arte convinced that this town inspired the movie's setting. Residents and visitors agree, "It's a Wonderful Town"
At the top of Cayuga Lake you can pause at the Montezuma Winery to taste some wine or mead, or at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge protects 320 species of birds, supporting the nesting and migration of many thousands of birds.
Skaneateles, pronounced Skinny-Atlas, is a quaint little town on the northern end of Skaneateles Lake. It is named after an Indian word for "long lake".
We will be staying at the historic Sherwood Inn located right on the northern tip of the lake, adjacent to the "downtown" area. The Inn overlooks the lake and the guest rooms are appointed with antiques.
