The 2006 Finger Lakes Tandem Tour (central)

Day 1, Sunday

Ride from Elmira to Hammondsport along the Chemung River
47 miles easy.

We will gather at 9:00am at Rich and Lindy’s house, meet the other tour participants, load luggage, and start the ride by 10:00am.

Our first transfer day and a relatively flat one!

The ride follows the Chemung River on Route 352 to Corning.
Pause in Corning and see the Corning Museum of Glass, Rockwell Museum of Western Art, or shop downtown. We know you might want to hurry to Hammondsport, but Corning is well worth a stop.
Passing under Route 86 (formerly Rt 17), we continue west following the Cohocton River from Painted Post to east of Bath.

This is a great, quiet country road through a wide river valley. This is the way settlers moved wets, followed by the early railroads. Note it has many railroad crossings - be cautious! We ride at times very close to the river, along a shaded lane.

We skirt around Bath, passing Lake Salubria.

We then head up the valley below Keuka Lake to Hammondsport. Hammondsport is a summer getaway favorite, with a large village square surrounded by lots of small shops, a favorite ice cream parlor, and restaurants.

This afternoon, come join us in the Gazebo before dinner (4:30 to 5:30 pm) to share stories and have some soda, wine, and munchies.

We’ve arranged a group dinner, to celebrate our ride together.
